River ReportsAugust 29th, Things Are Just Getting Good!Submitted by paul on Sun, 08/29/2010 - 14:00Someone came in the shop the other day and said "Where has the summer gone?" I thought about it a bit and then realized my favorite time to fish the Elk was fast approaching. The month of September! The water levels are down, the trees starting to change color, and the BAETIS HATCHES! There is nothing like watching feeding cutties as they slurp up the parade of flavs and BWO's floating down the foam lines. Friday Aug 27th proved to be one of the best BWO hatches I have seen this year and I know there will be many more to come. Also the Bull trout have settled in and are planning their spawn. There are still some agressive ones out there so bring a big rod if you want to land one of the big boys! Water Conditions:
Flows are around 23 to 25 cubic M and may fluctuate with the recent rains. However, this is perfect for BWO hatches as you need nice slow flows to fish these smaller patterns. The water has been gin clear and still enough to float the hard bottom boats. Hatches:
Flavilinea, Baetis, on the cooler wet days. October caddis are starting to pop out as well. If we get a warm day then back on to the hoppers and other terrestrials. Flies To Use:
PA, Aire flo BWO, Cripples, Orange stimi, and foam hoppers. August. 14, 2010Submitted by beckie on Sat, 08/14/2010 - 13:28I have been wondering the banks of the local waters aimlessly catching fish and have totally kept my hands off the keyboard! Better to have a fly rod in hand than be stuck at a desk typing.....!!! Wow, it feels like I abandoned all of you and forgot to write river reports. How selfish! I apologize for the ill communication on transferring of information to ensure that all of you fantastic fisherman are well informed. However, I am going to take this opportunity to TOTALLY REDEEM MYSELF and fill you in on all the most recent local fishing gossip! Water Conditions:
Elk River and Tribs are all holding their own and no super skinny water to report. You will see a few spots on the Elk River starting to get a little shallow off the gravel drops but either way G4 bottom or not you will be ok..... Hatches:
Big Phat Green Drakes Mahogany Duns Yellow / Lime Sallies PMDs / PEDs
Flies To Use:
Big Old Rubber Patterns from the boat for those weak eyes to see. Patterns like: Phat Alberts, Water Walkers, Big Yellow Stimis, Red Bobs and perhaps some natural colored PMX's Matching the Mayfly: This has to be my absolute favorite bug to imitate and fish. They are magical and dance around the skies like they know what they are doing, unlike some of those big ugly caddis that don't have a clue how to manage their wings. If you see bugs gracefully floating throught the ski chances are they are a mayfly.....GRAB ONE...look at it and pick something from your fly box that looks like it. The biggest mistake anglers make when matching the mayfly is they actually size up too big. The size is the most important part of matching the hatch. Patterns: Mahogany Biot Dun or any Mahogany / Brownish Bodies mayfly size 12 / 14 Green Drakes Sz 14 / Sz 10 PED Sz 16 Blue Wing Olive sz 18 for those picky fish Caddis......still lots of these out there. Try an olive sz 12 Hoppers and Ants if it's a nice HOT day! Commentary:
Tantalizing drifts are key to succesfully catching fish around here. You could throw any fly out there and if you don't show it to them just the way they like...forget it, they won't bother wasting their energy coming up. So don't forget to MED THAT LINE!
Aug 3, 2010 Yes we are slacking on getting the River Reports up to date.Submitted by paul on Tue, 08/03/2010 - 22:06Sorry for the lack of updates. A slight computer glitch occurred when we switched servers and lost a few reports that i thought were posted. Thats no excuse but the fact that the fishing is excellent on the ELk, The Bull, The Michelle<, The Marys, and the Crow. Oh ya, you can also get Jiggy on the Wiggy too!!!!
Water Conditions:
Flows, Clarity and everything else water related is Excellent, and i'm sure its better than the waters in your area so get down here! FOR THOSE THAT MUST KNOW.....DISCHARGE IS AT 40 cubic M Hatches:
Drakes, Sallys, caddis, and there are lots of small green hoppers in the tall bank grass! Also hatching are great sales at the shop!!! Flies To Use:
Come by the shop and we will tell you. Commentary:
I know this is a cheezey report but when the fly fishing is this good its hard to write a good report. feel free to email us your report and we will be happy to post it! July 19, 2010 Evening Showers Bring Great hatches!Submitted by paul on Mon, 07/19/2010 - 11:08If you like fishing the famous Green Drake Hatches of the Elk River then you should get down here fast. This weeks forecast calls for warm weather with a chance of afternoon showers. This is perfect Green Drake weather and also great Drift Boat fishing weather. Casting big attractors as you float the Elk and then match the hatch on the inside bends and runs make for some amazing dry fly action.
